About the Exhibition:

The Northshore Camellia Society has moved its December 19, 2009 Annual Show and Sale to St. Scholastica’s Gymnasium to accommodate the large crowds in attendance last year.  President Jim Campbell said that the new location also allows more space for the showing, judging and sale of camellias.  Last year, there were over 800 blooms in display.  Nearly 1,000 are expected this year as a result of the good growing season, and the continuing interest of home owners who want camellias in their gardens.

Events start at 8am - 10:30 am when blooms are to be brought in for judging.  Anyone can enter the judging, with about 60 awards presented, ranging from Novice class to awards based on size, variety, color.  Anyone with a camellia plant is encouraged to enter the Show.  It is only open to non-commercial growers.  Members of the club will be available to help with displaying the blooms.  Judging takes place at 11am and the Show is open to the public from 1:30pm-4:30 pm.  The Show is accredited by the American Camellia Society. This means the judges have ACS certification and the names of award winners will be published in the ACS Journal.

Sale of camellia plants will begin at 9am.  There will be about 100 plants for sale ranging in size from 3 gallon containers to mature plants, some 7ft. tall in 15 gallon containers.  These are high quality camellias, grown locally with most varieties not found at big-box stores.

Of special interest is the recent resolution by the Legislature of Louisiana recognizing the time period from the first of December until the following 16th day of April of each year as the Official State Camellia Season.  In passing this resolution, the Legislature recognized that while other flowers lie dormant during winter, the camellia presents its beauty during the bleakest portion of the year.  It has been documented that as early as 1830, Louisiana was at the forefront in the introduction of camellias to the united States from the Orient - first at the Mississippi River plantations and E.A. McIlhenny’s Avery Island estate.  Later, Mr. McIlhenny spread the popularity of camellias by donating stock to LSU.  Now camellias adorn many great public gardens, as well as private homes.

There will be free materials regarding growing camellias, soils, fertilizers cuttings, etc. There is no charge to visit the Show nor to enter blooms.
